Herniated lumbar disc is a condition where the most common is herniation of the nucleus pulposus tissue through the annulus fibrosus to stimulate and compress the cauda equina nerve or nerve root after degenerative changes in the lumbar disc. This is also a frequent cause of low back and leg pain. The disease is more common in people of middle age, with 20-50 years being the age group of the majority of cases, and its causes are usually associated with poor posture for a long time, overwork, and trauma. Home care plays an important role in relieving the symptoms of herniated lumbar discs, but many people do not understand the care method. Therefore, the article will focus on specific home care methods, and we hope that it can be helpful to everyone.

Maintain the correct posture

Sitting position: You should choose a chair with a backrest when sitting, keep your waist straight and then place your feet flat on the ground that can help reduce the pressure on your waist. Do not lean over or hunch over for long periods of time, as this improper posture not only will cause the pain to aggravate but also will increase the burden on the waist.

Standing posture: Your back should be straight when standing; however, you should not be motionless for long periods of time, and you can also alternate placing one foot on a low stool if necessary, which will not only reduce the burden on your waist but also improve blood circulation.

Sleeping postures: For the purposes of sleeping, it is better to select a firm mattress on which you can place a pillow between your legs to support you when lying on your side; if you are lying on your back, a pillow under your knees can help reduce pressure on your waist and relieve discomfort.

Moderate exercise and rest

Exercise: With a herniated disc in the lumbar region of the spine, that area of the body can be strengthened by moderate physical exercises which will also result in the reduction of lumbar pressure. One is usually encouraged to take swimming, stomach stretching, and core muscle group training as a routine. For instance, while swimming, the water can take away some of the weight from the waist which is a perfect method of exercising for a patient. The common stretching exercises are the cat stretch, bridge exercises, etc., which can be used to release the tightness of the back. The ways to strengthen the abdominal and back muscles through planking, sit-ups, and more are considered as common core muscle group training.

Rest: When caught in a flare-up of lumbar disc herniation, it is advisable to refrain from engaging in intensive activities and stay in bed as much as possible. However, do not stay in bed for a very long time;

Avoid heavy manual labor

Avoid lifting heavy objects: You should lift less heavy objects in everyday life and avoid bending down to carry them; if you have to carry them, squat down first, straighten your waist and back, and then rise with the help of your legs.

Avoid staying in the same position for long periods of time: Patients should not stay in the same position for a long time e.g. driving for long periods of time, sitting for a long time, etc. One can be advised to leave the seat and have a short walk every hour.

Hot vs cold compresses

Hot compress: It is recommended to use a hot compress for chronic pain and muscle tension for its effects that include improving blood flow, and relieving spasm, which should last for 15-20 minutes. One should not forget about the temperature control and the prevention of burns.

Cold compress: The cold compress is for use in situations of the most intense pain or inflammation. It can lower the swelling and ease the discomfort caused by it. The typical session lasts for 10-15 minutes and the ice pack should be wrapped in a towel so as not to cause frostbite.

Eat rationally

Use calcium supplements (and other nutrient supplements) reasonably: Patients with intervertebral disc protrusion in the lumbar region need to take calcium supplements in order to prevent osteoporosis. by itself, so that as much as they have to eat at least one portion out of carbrich foods daily such as milk, soy products, and fish, one of their diets is necessary to be consumed in daily lives.

Keep your weight in check: A very bad lifestyle such as Being overweight and obese can also lead to a more serious burden on your lumbar spine. Hence, try to maintain a healthy weight in your life, particularly if you are overweight or obese.

Scientific exercise

Each of the subsequent movements may help stretch the lower back muscles and alleviate any painful sensations:

Five-point support technique: Lying on the back, bending the arms at the elbows and stretching at the shoulders, bending the kid muscles while also bending the knees, and using the head, elbows and feet as the three points of contact to lift the waist off the bed.

Feiyan method: In the prone position, turn the neck back and lift the chest off the bed surface by force, both upper limbs are stretched behind the back, the legs are straightened, the feet are lifted, the stomach is the support point, and the upper and lower parts of the body are brought together.

Here, it is also emphasized that the wrong and improper massage may worsen your condition, and hence you are advised to do the massage only under the supervision of a professional doctor. On the other hand, it is also true that although analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs can help relieve symptoms, if taken for a long time, they may result in different side effects; thus, caution should be exercised when using these medications in daily life.
