Pomegranate & Parkinson’s: Antioxidants, Neuroprotection, and Gut-Brain Health

Currently, while the medical breakthroughs keep multiplying and nature is still our go-to for the most bizarre and very slowly apparent health-related reasons, fruit is confirming its true health value for the first time in history of mankind. In particular, the pomegranate, once an occult and once the brightest charismatic in the neuroscience field, has been the toughest and the most impressive aspect of the recent research for Parkinson‘s disease treatment has been its positive impact.

I. Strengtheners of antioxidant defence systems

Pomegranate, which is referred to as “a storehouse of natural antioxidants”, is a rich source of various antioxidants such as ellagitannins, anthocyanins, and vitamin C. These substances interact with one another to form a potent antioxidant defense system that effectively neutralizes free radicals in the body and thus prevents neurons from oxidative stress. A prolonged treatment with pomegranate can have a significant impact on the activity of antioxidant enzymes and the reduction of oxidation markers in patients with Parkinson‘s disease, which in turn, can prevent nerve cells from further damage and create a base for calmness and remission of the disease.

II. Mild inhibitors of neuroinflammation

Neuroinflammation, which is a major cause of Parkinson’s disease progress, has a dual effect, firstly, it worsens the death of neurons and secondly it changes the normal flow of neurotransmitters and, thus, symptoms such as dyskinesia become more severe. One of the components of pomegranates which are as effective as pomegranate polyphenols, for example, is the research area of major anti-inflammatory effects. They could reduce the production of inflammatory factors in the body and inhibit the over-activation of microglia which is consequently the reduction of the neuroinflammatory response. In clinical observation, doctors found that, after PB patients had been tested blood inflammatory indicators, the inflammatory indicators in blood significantly decreased after they took pomegranate regularly, and some patients subjectively reported the alleviation of the motor symptoms and the improvement of the living quality. This discovery points to new directions of treatments which are not drug-based for Parkinson’s disease.

III. Potential facilitators of neuroprotection and regeneration

Certain biologically active substances in pomegranates, such as pomegranate and gallic acid, have the effect of promoting nerve growth factors expression, the latter of which are the key factors for neuroprotection, neuronal differentiation, and axonal regeneration. Although the evidence of pomegranates directly stimulating neural regeneration is limited at present, in the research with animals, pomegranate extract has proved capable of recovery of neurological functions in the nerve injury model of animals.

IV. “Regulator of intestinal flora balance”

The relationship between gut flora and neurological diseases has been the topic of discussion a lot in recent years. Patients who suffer from Parkinson’s disease are usually affected by gut flora imbalance, which can be the cause of the brain losing its function through the “gut-brain axis.” The dietary fiber and several bioactive compounds contained in pomegranates support intestinal microbiota diversity, encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria, and inhibit the growth of dangerous bacteria. Doctors have found that after P patients had adjusted their diet to include more pomegranate, not only were gastrointestinal symptoms such as constipation significantly relieved, but in addition to this, some patients were able to feel the relief of non-motor symptoms such as mood swings and sleep disorders..
